প্রশ্নঃ কুরআনে বলা হয়েছে, ‘আল্লাহ আমাদের জন্য লোহা পাঠিয়েছেন’ - এর অর্থ কি?

উত্তরঃ
সুরা হাদিদ এর ২৫ নং আয়াতে বলা হয়েছে “আল্লাহ লোহা পাঠিয়েছেন যার মধ্যে রয়েছে প্রচণ্ড শক্তি এবং রয়েছে মানুষের জন্য বহুবিধ কল্যাণ”।

এখানে আরবি ‘আনঝালা’ শব্দটি ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে যার অর্থ প্রেরণ করা। এখানে দু’ভাবে শব্দটির অর্থ করা যেতে পারে- ‘আল্লাহ প্রকাশ করেছেন’ এবং ‘আল্লাহ পাঠিয়েছেন’।

অর্থাৎ আল্লাহ প্রকাশ করেছেন যে লোহার নানারকম ব্যবহার রয়েছে এবং এটি মানুষের জন্য খুবই উপকারী। আর আমরা সবাই জানি লোহা খুবই উপকারী ধাতু। কাজেই প্রথম অর্থ অনুযায়ী লোহার এই উপকারীতার কথাই আল্লাহ প্রকাশ করেছেন।

এবার দ্বিতীয় অর্থে আসা যাক। কুরআনের এই আয়াতটি সম্পর্কে প্রফেসর আর্মস্ট্রংকে মন্তব্য করতে বলা হয়েছিল। তিনি এ সম্পর্কে বলেন যে সম্প্রতি বিজ্ঞানীরা বিভিন্ন মৌল পদার্থের গঠন প্রক্রিয়া সম্পর্কে জানতে পেরেছেন। তারা বলেন যে লোহার একটি পরমাণু তৈরি করতে যে পরিমাণ শক্তি প্রয়োজন তা এতই বেশী যে সমগ্র সৌরজগতের শক্তিও এর জন্য পর্যাপ্ত নয়। হিসাব করে দেখান হয়েছে যে লোহার একটি পরমাণু তৈরি করতে সৌরজগতের শক্তির চারগুণ শক্তি প্রয়োজন। কাজেই বিজ্ঞানীরা বর্তমানে বলছেন যে লোহা এসেছে পৃথিবীর বাইরে থেকে (extra terrestrial metal)। অর্থাৎ দ্বিতীয় অর্থটিও এক্ষেত্রে সঠিক প্রমাণিত হয়েছে।

Muslims seek answer

প্রখ্যাত ইয়েমেনি স্কলার Sheikh Abdul Majid Azzindani এর তত্ত্বাবধানে কিছু মুসলিম Scholar কুরআন ও সহীহ হাদিছ এ Embryology ও অন্যান্য বৈজ্ঞানিক বিষয়ে বর্ণিত তথ্য সংগ্রহ করেন। তারা সেগুলো ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদ করেন। এরপর তাঁরা কুরআনের নিম্নোক্ত উপদেশ অনুসরণ করেন-

“If ye realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message.” [Al-Qur’an 16:43 & 21:7]

সংগৃহিত তথ্যগুলো তাঁরা Embriology এর প্রফেসর এবং টরোনটো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের Anatomy বিভাগের চেয়ারম্যান ড.কিথ মুর এর কাছে উপস্থাপন করেন।

তাঁকে এগুলোর উপর মন্তব্য করতে বলা হয়। বিষয়গুলো ভালভাবে পর্যবেক্ষণ করে তিনি বলেন যে অধিকাংশ তথ্যই Embryology এর আধুনিক আবিষ্কারের সাথে সম্পূর্ণভাবে মিলে যায় এবং কোন তথ্যই এসব আবিষ্কারের বিরুদ্ধে (conflict) যায় না।

তিনি আরো বলেন, কিছু কিছু তথ্য সম্পর্কে তিনি মন্তব্য করতে পারছেন না কারণ সেগুলো সম্পর্কে তিনি নিজেই অবগত নন। এসব তথ্যের কোন উল্লেখ তখনকার গবেষণায় ছিল না।এরকম একটি আয়াত হল-

“Proclaim! (or Read!) In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created – Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood.” [Al-Qur’an 96:1-2]

এখানে আরবি ‘আলাক্ব’ শব্দটি ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে যার অর্থ ‘জমাট বাঁধা রক্ত’ (congealed clot of blood); এর আরেকটি অর্থ ‘কোনকিছুর সাথে আটকে থাকা বস্তু’ (something that clings) বা জোঁকের মত কিছু একটা।

ড.কিথ মুর তখনো জানতেন না যে প্রাথমিক অবস্থায় ভ্রূণ (embryo) দেখতে জোঁকের মত কিনা। এটা পরীক্ষা করার জন্য তিনি শক্তিশালী অণুবীক্ষণ যন্ত্রের নিচে ভ্রূণের প্রাথমিক অবস্থা পর্যবেক্ষণ করেন এবং জোঁকের ছবির সাথে তা মিলিয়ে দেখেন। তিনি অবাক হয়ে লক্ষ্য করেন এ দুয়ের মাঝে তাক লাগানোর মত সাদৃশ্য বিদ্যমান।

ড.কিথ মুর Embryology সম্পর্কিত আশিটির মত বিষয়ের জবাব দেন যা কুরআন ও সহীহ হাদিছ এ বর্ণিত আছে। তিনি বলেন, “আজ থেকে ৩০ বছর আগে এ প্রশ্নগুলো করা হলে আমি অর্ধেকেরও বেশির জবাব দিতে পারতাম না কারণ এগুলো তখনো আবিষ্কৃত হয়নি।”

১৯৮১ সালে সৌদি আরবের দাম্মামে অনুষ্ঠিত সপ্তম মেডিকেল কনফারেন্সে ড.কিথ মোর বলেন,
“It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the Qur’an about human development. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God or Allah, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God or Allah”

তিনি এর আগে ‘The Developing Human’ নামে একটি বই লিখেছিলেন। কুরআন থেকে নতুন তথ্য জানার পর তিনি ১৯৮২ সালে এই বইএর ৩য় সংস্করণ লেখেন যা শ্রেষ্ঠ মেডিকেল বই হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি পায়।

বেইলর কলেজ অফ মেডিসিন এর Obstetrics and Gynaecology বিভাগের চেয়ারম্যান ড. জো লী সিম্পসন বলেন,
“…these Hadiths, sayings of Muhammad (pbuh), could not have been obtained on the basis of the scientific knowledge that was available at the time of the writer (implying in the 7th century). It follows that not only is there no conflict between genetics and religion (implying Islam) but in fact religion (Islam) may guide science by adding revelation to some of the traditional scientific approaches . . . there exist statements in the Qur’an shown centuries later to be valid which support knowledge in the Qur’an having been derived from God.”

DROP EMITTED FROM BETWEEN THE BACK BONE AND THE RIBS

“Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from a drop emitted – Proceeding from between the back bone and the ribs.” [Al-Qur’an 86:5-7]

Embryonic অবস্থায় পুরুষ ও স্ত্রীর Reproductive Organ-গুলো বেড়ে ওঠে কিডনীর কাছাকাছি যায়গায় যা Spinal Column এবং ১১-তম ও ১২-তম Rib এর মধ্যে অবস্থিত। পরবর্তীতে Reproductive Organ-গুলো নেমে আসতে (descend) থাকে এবং Inguinal Canal এর মধ্য দিয়ে Scrotum এ নেমে আসে। সম্পূর্ণ বেড়ে ওঠার পরও তারা nerve supply এবং blood supply পেয়ে থাকে Abdominal Aorta থেকে যা backbone (spinal column) এবং ribs এর মধ্যে অবস্থিত।

উপরের আয়াতে এ বিষয়টির কথাই বলা হয়েছে।

নুতফাহ – MINUTE QUANTITY OF LIQUID

আল-কুরআনে কমপক্ষে ১১ জায়গায় (যেমন ২২:৫, ২৩:১৩) বলা হয়েছে যে মানুষকে ‘নুতফাহ’ থেকে সৃষ্টি করা হয়েছে। ‘নুতফাহ’ অর্থ খুবই সামান্য পরিমাণ তরল (or a trickle of liquid that remains after emptying a cup)।

অতি সম্প্রতি আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছে যে গড়ে তিন মিলিয়ন sperm এর মধ্যে মাত্র একটিই ovum কে fertilize করতে যথেষ্ট। অর্থাৎ fertilization এর জন্য মাত্র ০.০০০০৩ % sperm ই যথেষ্ট।

সুলালাহ – QUINTESSENCE OF LIQUID

“And made his progeny from a quintessence of the nature of a fluid despised.” [Al-Qur’an 32:8]

আরবি শব্দ ‘সুলালাহ’ অর্থ quintessence বা কোন কিছুর সর্বৎকৃষ্ট অংশ। আগেই বলা হয়েছে যে গড়ে তিন মিলিয়ন sperm এর মধ্যে মাত্র একটিই ovum কে fertilize করে। এছাড়া হাজার হাজার ovum এর মধ্যে মাত্র একটিই fertilized হয়। এই অংশগুলোকেই ‘সুলালাহ’ বলা হয়েছে।

নুতফাতিন আমশায – MINGLED LIQUIDS

“Verily We created man from a drop of mingled sperm.” [Al-Qur’an 76:2]

আরবি শব্দ ‘নুতফাতিন আমশায’ এর অর্থ mingled liquids. এখানে এর দ্বারা পুরুষ ও স্ত্রী গ্যামেট ও এর চারপাশের তরলের অংশকে বুঝান হয়েছে।

SEX DETERMINATION

একটি সন্তান ছেলে হবে না মেয়ে হবে তা নির্ভর করে sperm এর বৈশিষ্টের উপর - ovum এর বৈশিষ্টের উপর নয়। sperm এর ২৩-তম ক্রোমোসোমটি XX নাকি XY - তার উপর এটা নির্ভর করে।

“That He did create in pairs – male and female, from a seed(nutfah) when lodged (in its place).” [Al-Qur’an 53:45-46]

এখানে ‘নুতফাহ’ বলতে sperm কে বুঝান হয়েছে। আল-কুরআন এ আরো বলা হয়েছে-
“Was he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)? “Then did he become a clinging clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion. “And of him He made two sexes, male and female.”
[Al-Qur’an 75:37-39]

এখানে স্পষ্ট উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে যে sperm এর বৈশিষ্ট্য দ্বারাই নির্ধারিত হয় সন্তান ছেলে হবে না মেয়ে হবে।

FOETUS PROTECTED BY THREE VEILS OF DARKNESS

“He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness.”

ড.কিথ মোর এর মতে এই তিনটি আবরণ (veil) হচ্ছে-

i. anterior abdominal wall of the mother
ii. the uterine wall
iii. the amnio-chorionic membrane.

EMBRYOLOGICAL STAGES

‘We have created the human beings from a quintessence of clay, then made it into a drop, placed it into ‘Qarare Makeen’ place of security, then made it into an ‘Alaqa’, something which clings, a leech like substance, made that ‘Alaqa’ into ‘Mudga’, a chewed like lump, made that ‘Mudga’, into ‘Izama’ bones, then clothed the ‘Izama’, bones with ‘Lahem’ that is flesh and then made it into a creature – Blessed is He, the best to create’. [Al-Qur’an 23:12-14]

এ আয়াতগুলোতে আল্লাহ সুবহানাহু ওয়া তায়ালা বলেন, মানুষকে সামান্য পরিমাণ তরল থেকে সৃষ্টি করা হয়েছে যা স্থাপন করা হয় সুস্থিত এক স্থানে। এ স্থানটিকে আরবিতে ‘qaraarin makeen’ বলা হয়েছে।

এ সামান্য পরিমাণ তরল পরে ‘আলাক্ব’ এ পরিণত হয় যার তিনটি অর্থ-
– কোনকিছুর সাথে আটকে থাকা বস্তু’ (something that clings),
– জোঁকের মত কিছু একটা’ (leech like substance)
– জমাট বাঁধা রক্ত’ (blood clot)

এ তিনটি অর্থই বৈজ্ঞানিকভাবে সঠিক কারণ প্রাথমিক অবস্থায় ভ্রূণ মাতৃগর্ভের uterine wall এর সাথে আটকে থাকে। এটি দেখতে জোঁকের মত যা ড. কিথ মুর নিশ্চিত করেছেন। আর ভ্রূণের এই পর্যায়ে (৩য় ও ৪র্থ সপ্তাহ) বদ্ধ vessel এর মধ্যে রক্ত জমাট বেঁধে থাকে বলে একে দেখতে জমাট বাঁধা রক্তের মত লাগে। বিজ্ঞানের এই আধুনিকতম পর্যবেক্ষণগুলোর সাথে কুরআনের তথ্যগুলো মিলিয়ে দেখলে এটা বুঝতে বাকি থাকে না যে আল-কুরআন মহান সৃষ্টিকর্তার বাণী।

আলাক্বা এর পরবর্তী পর্যায় হল ‘মুদ্গাহ’ যার অর্থ হল ’something that is chewed’ অথবা ’something that is tacky and small which can be put in the mouth like gum’. উভয় অর্থই বৈজ্ঞানিকভাবে সঠিক। প্রফেসর মুর একটি প্লাস্টার সিল নিয়ে একে foetus এর আকৃতিতে পরিণত করেন এবং একে চিবিয়ে মুদ্গাহর আকারে পরিণত করেন। তিনি এটিকে foetus এর প্রাথমিক ছবির সাথে মিলিয়ে দেখেন যে teeth mark গুলো দেখতে somites এর মত যারা spinal column এর প্রাথমিক অবস্থা। মুদ্গাহ দ্বারা একেই বুঝানো হয়েছে।

মুদ্গাহ পরবর্তিতে ইজাম (bones) এ পরিণত হয় যার উপর লাহম (muscle) এর আবরণ দেয়া হয়।

Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in the USA-এর Department of Anatomy এর প্রধান Prof. Marshall Johnson কে কুরআনের এই তথ্যগুলোর উপর মন্তব্য করতে বলা হলে তিনি প্রথমে বলেন যে মুহাম্মাদ (সঃ) এর কাছে হয়ত একটি শক্তিশালী অনুবীক্ষণ যন্ত্র ছিল। তখন তাকে মনে করিয়ে দেয়া হয় যে কুরআন ১৪০০ বছর আগে নাযিল হয়েছে এবং এর অনেক শতক পরে অনুবীক্ষণ যন্ত্র আবিষ্কৃত হয়। তিনি হেসে বললেন যে প্রথম অনুবীক্ষণ যন্ত্র ১০ গুণের বেশী বিবর্ধিত করতে পারত না আর এর দ্বারা পরিষ্কার ছবি পাওয়া সম্ভব ছিল না। পরবর্তীতে তিনি বলেন,

“I see nothing here in conflict with the concept that Divine intervention was involved when Muhammad (pbuh) recited the Qur’an.”

EMBRYO PARTLY FORMED AND PARTLY UNFORMED

মুদ্গাহ পর্যায়ে বিশ্লেষণ করা হলে দেখা যায় বেশিরভাগ অংগই গঠিত হয় এবং বাকিগুলো আংশিক গঠিত অবস্থায় থাকে। প্রফেসর জনসন বলেন embryo কে ‘complete creation’ বা ‘incomplete creation’ কোনটি দ্বারাই সম্পূর্ণরূপে ব্যাখ্যা করা যায় না। কারণ উভয়টি এখানে একসাথে প্রযোজ্য। কুরআনে চমৎকারভাবে এই বিষয়টি বলা আছে-

“We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed that We may manifest (Our Power) to you.” [Al-Qur’an 22:5]

SENSE OF HEARING AND SIGHT

গর্ভে থাকাকালে প্রথম শ্রবণ ইন্দ্রিয় গঠিত হয়। ২৪-তম সপ্তাহে foetus শব্দ শুনতে পায়। এরপর ২৮ -তম সপ্তাহে দৃষ্টি শক্তি গঠিত হয়। আল-কুরআনে বলা হয়েছে-

“And He gave you (the faculties of) hearing and sight and feeling (and understanding).” [Al-Qur’an 32:9]

“Verily We created man from a drop of mingled sperm, in order to try him: so We gave him (the gifts), of Hearing and Sight.” [Al-Qur’an 76:2]

“It is He Who has created for you (the faculties of) hearing, sight, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give!” [Al-Qur’an 23:78]

প্রত্যেকটি আয়াতে শ্রবণ ইন্দ্রিয়ের কথা দৃষ্টি শক্তির আগে বলা হয়েছে যা আধুনিক ভ্রূণতত্ত্বের সাথে সম্পূর্ণ সংগতিপূর্ণ।

আগে মনে করা হত যে পৃথিবী সমতল। স্যার ফ্রান্সিস ড্রেক ১৫৯৭ সালে প্রথম প্রমাণ করেন যে পৃথিবী গোলকাকৃতি।
আসুন দেখি কুরআন কী বলে। নিম্নোক্ত আয়াতটি লক্ষ্য করুনঃ

Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day and He merges Day into Night?”
[Al-Qur’an 31:29]

এখানে লক্ষ্য করতে বলা হয়েছে যে, দিনের শেষে ধীরে ধীরে রাত নেমে আসে আর রাতের শেষে ধীরে ধীরে দিন শুরু হয়। পৃথিবী গোলকাকৃতি না হলে এটা সম্ভব হত না। পৃথিবী সমতল হলে দিন ও রাতের পরিবর্তন হঠাৎ করে হত।

এরকম আর একটি আয়াত হলঃ

“He created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): He makes the Night
overlap the Day, and the Day overlap the Night.” [Al-Qur’an 39:5]

এখানে ‘overlap’ শব্দটি ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে যা পৃথিবী গোলকাকৃতি না হলে সম্ভব নয়।

আমরা জানি পৃথিবী সম্পূর্ণ গোলকাকৃতি নয়; উত্তর ও দক্ষিণে কিছুটা চাপা। এ সম্পর্কে নিম্নোক্ত আয়াতটি লক্ষ্য করুনঃ

And the earth, moreover, hath He made egg shaped.” [Al-Qur’an 79:30]

এখানে আরবি ‘dahaahaa’ শব্দটি ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে যার অর্থ উট পাখির ডিম যার আকৃতি চমৎকারভাবে পৃথিবীর আকৃতির সাথে মিলে যায়।

কুরআন চমৎকারভাবে পৃথিবীর আকৃতি বর্ণনা করেছে ১৪০০ বছর আগে। বিষয়গুলো আমাদের ভেবে দেখা দরকার।

গ্যালাক্সী তৈরী হবার পূর্বেকার গ্যাসীয় পদার্থ

বিজ্ঞানীরা এ বিষয়ে একমত যে গ্যালাক্সী তৈরী হবার পূর্বে মহাজাগতিক পদার্থ গ্যাসীয় অবস্থায় ছিল। অর্থাৎ সেগুলোকে বিপুল পরিমাণ গ্যাসীয় পদার্থের মেঘ হিসেবে ভাবা যেতে পারে যা ধোঁয়ার মত ছিল। কুরআনের নিম্নোক্ত আয়াতটি বিশ্বজগৎ সৃষ্টির এই অবস্থাকে ‘দুখান’ হিসেবে ব্যাখ্যা করা হয়েছে যার অর্থ ‘ধোঁয়া’:

“Moreover, He Comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke:
He said to it and to the earth: ‘Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly.’
They said: ‘We do come (together), in willing obedience.’ ” [Al-Qur’an 41:11]

গ্যালাক্সী তৈরী হবার পূর্বেকার এই অবস্থা কুরআন নাযিল হবার সময় বা এর পূর্বে জানা ছিল না। এই জ্ঞানের উৎস কী?
এরকম আরো অনেক বিষয় কুরআন এ বর্ণিত আছে যা আধুনিক বিজ্ঞানের আবিষ্কার।

নিঃসন্দেহে মহান সৃষ্টিকর্তাই কুরআন নাযিল করেছেন। কাজেই আমাদের সকলের উচিৎ এর অনুসরণ করা, কেননা সৃষ্টিকর্তাই জানেন তার সৃষ্টির জন্য কোনটা ভাল আর কোনটা মন্দ।

Was Islam spread at the point of sword.

Ans:

It is a common complaint among some non-Muslims that Islam would not have millions of adherents all over the world, if it had not been spread by the use of force. The following points will make it clear, that far from being spread by the sword, it was the inherent force of truth, reason and logic that was responsible for
the rapid spread of Islam.

1. Islam means Peace

Islam comes from the root word ‘salaam’, which means peace. It also means submitting ones will to Allah (swt). Thus Islam is a religion of peace, which is acquired by submitting one’s will to the will of the Supreme Creator, Allah (swt).

2. Force needed to maintain peace

Each and every human being in this world is not in favour of maintaining peace and harmony. There are many, who would disrupt it for their own vested interests. Sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace. It is precisely for this reason that we have the police who use force against criminals and anti-
social elements to maintain peace in the country. Islam promotes peace. At the same time, Islam exhorts it followers to fight where there is oppression. The fight against oppression may, at times, require the use of force. In Islam force can only be used to promote peace and justice.

3. Opinion of historian De Lacy O’Leary.

The best reply to the misconception that Islam was spread by the sword is given by the noted historian De Lacy O’Leary in the book ’Islam at the cross road’ (Page 8):
’History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myth that historians have ever repeated.’

4. Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years.

Muslims ruled Spain for about 800 years. The Muslims in Spain never used the sword to force the people to convert. Later the Christian Crusaders came to Spain and wiped out the Muslims. There was not a single Muslim in Spain who could openly give the adhan, that is the call for prayers.

5. 14 million Arabs are Coptic Christians.

Muslims were the lords of Arabia for 1400 years. For a few years the British ruled, and for a few years the French ruled. Overall, the Muslims ruled Arabia for 1400 years. Yet today, there are 14 million Arabs who are Coptic Christians i.e.Christians since generations. If the Muslims had used the sword there would not
have been a single Arab who would have remained a Christian.

6. More than 80% people are non-Muslims in India.

The Muslims ruled India for about a thousand years. If they wanted, they had the power of converting each and every non-Muslim of India to Islam. Today more than 80% of the population of India is non-Muslims. All these non-Muslim Indians are bearing witness today that Islam was not spread by the sword.

7. Indonesia and Malaysia.

Indonesia is a country that has the maximum number of Muslims in the world. The majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. May one ask, ’Which Muslim army went to Indonesia and Malaysia?’

8. East Coast of Africa.

Similarly, Islam has spread rapidly on the East Coast of Africa. One may again ask, if Islam was spread by the sword, ’Which Muslim army went to the East Coast of Africa?’

9. Thomas Carlyle.

The famous historian, Thomas Carlyle, in his book ’Heroes and Hero worship’, refers to this misconception about the spread of Islam: ’The sword indeed, but where will you get your sword? Every new opinion, at its starting is precisely in a minority of one. In one mans head alone. There it dwells as yet. One man alone
of the whole world believes it, there is one man against all men. That he takes a sword and try to propagate with that, will do little for him. You must get your sword! On the whole, a thing will propagate itself as it can.’

10. No compulsion in religion.

With which sword was Islam spread? Even if Muslims had it they could not use it to spread Islam because the Qur’an says in the following verse: ’Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error’ [Al-Qur’an 2:256]

11. Sword of the Intellect.

It is the sword of intellect. The sword that conquers the hearts and minds of people. The Qur’an says in Surah Nahl, chapter 16 verse 125:

’Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious.’ [Al-Qur’an 16:125]

12. Increase in the world religions from 1934 to 1984.

An article in Reader’s Digest ‘Almanac’, year book 1986, gave the statistics of the increase of percentage of the major religions of the world in half a century from 1934 to 1984. This article also appeared in ‘The Plain Truth’ magazine. At the top was Islam, which increased by 235%, and Christianity had increased only by
47%. May one ask, which war took place in this century which converted millions of people to Islam?

13. Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and Europe.

Today the fastest growing religion in America is Islam. The fastest growing religion in Europe in Islam. Which sword is forcing people in the West to accept Islam in such large numbers?

14. Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson.

Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson rightly says, ’People who worry that nuclear weaponry will one day fall in the hands of the Arabs, fail to realize that the Islamic bomb has been dropped already, it fell the day MUHAMMED (pbuh) was born’

This question is often hurled at Muslims, either directly or indirectly, during any discussion on religion or world affairs. Muslim stereotypes are perpetuated in every form of the media accompanied by gross misinformation about Islam and Muslims.  In  fact,  such  misinformation  and  false  propaganda  often  leads  to discrimination and acts of violence against Muslims.

A case in point is the anti-Muslim campaign in the American media following the Oklahoma bomb blast, where the press was quick to declare a ‘Middle Eastern conspiracy’ behind the attack. The culprit was later identified as a soldier from the American Armed Forces.

Let  us  analyze  this  allegation  of  ‘fundamentalism’  and  ‘terrorism’:

১. ‘মৌলবাদী’  শব্দটির সংজ্ঞা

A fundamentalist is a person who follows and adheres to the fundamentals of the doctrine or theory he is following. For a person to be a good doctor, he should know, follow, and practice the fundamentals of medicine. In other words, he should be a fundamentalist in the field of medicine. For a person to be a good
mathematician,  he  should  know,  follow  and  practice  the  fundamentals  of mathematics. He should be a fundamentalist in the field of mathematics. For a person  to  be  a  good  scientist,  he  should  know,  follow  and  practice  the fundamentals of science. He should be a fundamentalist in the field of science.

২. সকল ‘মৌলবাদী’ ই এক নয়

One  cannot  paint  all  fundamentalists  with  the  same  brush.  One  cannot categorize all fundamentalists as either good or bad. Such a categorization of any  fundamentalist  will  depend  upon  the  field  or  activity  in  which  he  is  a fundamentalist. A fundamentalist robber or thief causes harm to society and is
therefore  undesirable.  A  fundamentalist  doctor,  on  the  other  hand,  benefits society and earns much respect.

৩. একজন মুসলমান মৌলবাদী হিসেবে আমি গর্বিত

I am a fundamentalist Muslim who, by the grace of Allah, knows, follows and strives to practice the fundamentals of Islam. A true Muslim does not shy away
from being a fundamentalist. I am proud to be a fundamentalist Muslim because I know that the fundamentals of Islam are beneficial to humanity and the whole
world. There is not a single fundamental of Islam that causes harm or is against the  interests  of  the  human  race  as  a  whole.  Many  people  harbour
misconceptions about Islam and consider several teachings of Islam to be unfair or improper. This is due to insufficient and incorrect knowledge of Islam. If one
critically analyzes the teachings of Islam with an open mind, one cannot escape the fact that Islam is full of benefits both at the individual and collective levels.

৪. ‘মৌলবাদী’  শব্দটি সম্পর্কে ডিকশনারি কী বলে?

According  to  Webster’s  dictionary  ‘fundamentalism’  was  a  movement  in American Protestanism that arose in the earlier part of the 20th century. It was a reaction  to  modernism,  and  stressed  the  infallibility  of  the  Bible,  not  only  in matters of faith and morals but also as a literal historical record. It stressed on
belief in the Bible as the literal word of God. Thus fundamentalism was a word initially  used  for  a  group  of  Christians  who  believed  that  the  Bible  was  the verbatim  word  of  God  without  any  errors  and  mistakes.

According to the Oxford dictionary ‘fundamentalism’ means ‘strict maintenance of ancient  or  fundamental  doctrines  of  any  religion,  especially  Islam’.

Today the moment a person uses the word fundamentalist he thinks of a Muslim who is a terrorist.

৫. প্রত্যেক মুসলমানের সন্ত্রাসী হওয়া উচিত

Every Muslim should be a terrorist. A terrorist is a person who causes terror. The moment a robber sees a policeman he is terrified. A policeman is a terrorist for the  robber.  Similarly  every  Muslim  should  be  a  terrorist  for  the  antisocial elements of society, such as thieves, dacoits and rapists. Whenever such an
anti-social element sees a Muslim, he should be terrified.

It is true that the word ‘terrorist’ is generally used for a person who causes terror among the common people. But a true Muslim should only be a terrorist to selective

people i.e. anti-social elements, and not to the common innocent people. In fact a Muslim should be a source of peace for innocent people.

৬. একই লোক - একই মানুষ কিন্তু দুইটি পরিচয়; যেমন- ‘দেশপ্রেমিক’ ও ‘সন্ত্রাসী’

Before India achieved independence from British rule; some freedom fighters of India who did not subscribe to non-violence were labeled as terrorists by the British government. The same individuals have been lauded by Indians for the same activities and hailed as ‘patriots’. Thus two different labels have been given
to the same people for the same set of actions. One is calling him a terrorist while the other is calling him a patriot.

Those who believed that Britain had a right to rule over India called these people terrorists, while those who were of the view that Britain had no right to rule India called them patriots and freedom fighters.

It is therefore important that before a person is judged, he is given a fair hearing. Both sides of the argument should be heard, the situation should be analyzed, and the reason and the intention of the person should be taken into account, and then  the  person  can  be  judged  accordingly.

৭. ইসলাম অর্থ শান্তি

Islam is derived from the word ‘salaam’ which means peace. It is a religion of peace whose fundamentals teach its followers to maintain and promote peace throughout the world.

Thus  every  Muslim  should  be  a  fundamentalist  i.e.  he  should  follow  the fundamentals  of  the  Religion  of  Peace:  Islam.  He  should  be  a  terrorist  only towards the antisocial elements in order to promote peace and justice in the society.

Question:
The Qur’an says that only Allah knows the sex of the child in the womb of the mother but now science has advanced and we can easily determine the sex of the child in the womb by ultrasonography. Isn’t this verse of the Qur’an conflicting with medical science?

Answer:

Allah is Omnipotent and Omniscient. Allah has granted knowledge of certain things to humankind. But Allah has knowledge of the seen as well as the unseen.

1. Allah has knowledge of all things

Many people believe that the Qur’an claims that Allah alone knows the sex of the child in the mother’s womb. The Glorious Qur’an says:

“Verily the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (alone). It is He who sends down Rain, and He who knows what is in the wombs….”
[Al-Qur’an 31:34]

A similar message is given in the following verse:

“Allah doth know what every female (womb) doth bear, By how much the wombs fall short (of their time or number) or do exceed. Every single thing is before His sight, in (due) proportion.”
[Al-Qur’an 13:8]

2. Sex can be determined by Ultrasonography

Today science has advanced and we can easily determine the sex of the child in the womb of a pregnant mother, using ultrasonography.

3. The word ‘sex’ is not mentioned in the verse of the Qur’an

It is true that many translations and commentaries of this verse of the Glorious Qur’an say that only Allah knows the sex of the child in the mother’s womb. If you read the Arabic text of this verse, there is no Arabic word corresponding to the English word ‘sex’. In fact the Qur’an says the knowledge of what is in the womb is with Allah alone. Many commentators have misunderstood it to mean only Allah knows the sex of the child in the womb, which is a mistake.

4. No one besides Allah can determine the nature of the child

This verse does not refer to the sex of the child in the womb but it refers to, how the child in the mother’s womb will be. How will his nature be? Will he be a blessing or a curse to his parents? Will he be a boon or a bane to the society? Will he be good or evil? Will he go to heaven or hell? The complete knowledge of all things is with Allah alone. No scientist in the world, no matter how advanced his equipment, will ever be able to accurately determine the knowledge of these things about the child in the mother’s womb.

Qur’an says that Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet. This gives an indication that the earth is flat. Does this not contradict established modern science?

Answer

1. Earth made as a carpet

The question refers to a verse from the Qur’an in Surah Nuh:

“And Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet (spread out).”
[Al-Qur’an 71:19]

But the sentence in the above verse is not complete. It continues in the next verse, explaining the previous verse. It says:

“That ye may go about therein, in spacious roads.”
[Al-Qur’an 71:20]

A similar message is repeated in Surah TaHa:

“He Who has made for you the earth like a carpet spread out; has enabled you to go about therein by roads (and channels)….”
[Al-Qur’an 20:53]

The surface of the earth i.e. earth’s crust is less than 30 miles in thickness and is very thin as compared to the radius of the earth which is about 3750 miles. The deeper layers of the earth are very hot, fluid and hostile to any form of life. The earth’s crust is a solidified shell on which we can live. The Qur’an rightly refers to it like a carpet spread out, so that we can travel along its roads and paths.

2. Carpet can also be spread on other than an absolute flat surface

Not a single verse of the Qur’an says that the earth is flat. The Qur’an only compares the earth’s crust with a carpet. Some people seem to think that carpet can only be put on an absolute flat surface. It is possible to spread a carpet on a large sphere such as the earth. It can easily be demonstrated by taking a huge model of the earth’s globe covering it with a carpet.

Carpet is generally put on a surface, which is not very comfortable to walk on. The Qur’an describes the earth crust as a carpet, without which human beings would not be able to survive because of the hot, fluid and hostile environment beneath it. The Qur’an is thus not only logical, it is mentioning a scientific fact that was discovered by geologists centuries later.

3. Earth has been spread out

Similarly, the Qur’an says in several verses that the earth has been spread out.

“And We have spread out the (spacious) earth: how excellently We do spread out!”
[Al-Qur’an 51:48]

Similarly the Qur’an also mentions in several other verses that the earth is an expanse:

“Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse”
“And the mountains as pegs?”
[Al-Qur’an 78:6-7]

None of these verses of the Qur’an contain even the slightest implication that the earth is flat. It only indicates that the earth is spacious and the reason for this spaciousness of the earth is mentioned. The Glorious Qur’an says:

“O My servants who believe! truly. spacious is My Earth: therefore serve ye Me –(And Me alone)!”
[Al-Qur’an 29:56]

Therefore none can give the excuse, that he could not do good and was forced to do evil because of the surroundings and circumstances.

4. Earth is geospherical in shape

The Qur’an mentions the actual shape of the earth in the following verse:

“And we have made the earth egg shaped”.
[Al-Qur’an 79:30]

The Arabic word Dahaha means egg shaped. It also means an expanse. Dahaha is derived from Duhiya which specifically refers to the egg of an ostrich which is geospherical in shape, exactly like the shape of the earth.

Thus the Qur’an and modern established science are in perfect harmony.

The Qur’an has mentioned the word ‘Hoor’, in no less than 4 diffrent places.

1. Surah Dukhan Ch. No. 44, Verse No. 54
So; and We shall join them to Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes.

2. Surah Tur, in Ch. No. 52, Verse No. 20,
They will recline (with ease) on Thrones (of dignity) arranged in ranks; and We shall join them to Companions, with beautiful big and lustrous eyes.

3. Surah Rehman, Ch. No. 55, Verse No. 72,
Companions restrained (as to5218 their glances), in (goodly) pavilions;

4. Surah Waqia, Ch. No.56, Verse No. 22,
And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes,

The above translations are by Abdullah Yusuf Ali.
His comments about the Hur is –
“Hur implies the following ideas: (1) purity; possibly the word Hawariyun, as applied to the first Disciples of Jesus, is connected with this root; (2) beauty, especially of eyes, where the intense white of the eyeballs stands out against the intense black of the pupil, thus giving the appearance of lustre, and intense feeling: as opposed to dullness or want of expression; and (3) truth and good will.”

But many of the translations, specially the Urdu translations have translated the word ‘Hoor’, as beautiful maiden. If the word ‘Hoor’, means a beautiful maiden, then what will the woman get, in Paradise?

Actually the word ‘Hoor’, is a plural for ‘Ahwar’, which is applicable to the man, and ‘Hawar’, which is applicable to the women. And it signifies the characteristic of ‘Hawar’, which means ‘big, white beautiful eye’, and describes especially, the whiteness of the eye.

The similar thing is mentioned as ‘Azwajur Muthaharin’ in many places in the Qur’an, in Surah Baqrah, Ch. No. 2, Verse No. 25, and in Surah Nisa, Ch. No. 4, Verse No. 57 - It says… ‘Azwajur Muthaharin’, which means companion, pair.

So the word ‘Hoor’, is rightly translated by Mohammed Asad as… ‘Spouse’ and also by Abdullah Yusuf Ali… Abdullah Yusuf Ali as… ‘Companion’ - So ‘Hoor’ actually means a ‘Companion’ or a ‘Spouse’ - It has no gender. For the man, he will get a good lady with big beautiful eyes - and for a woman, she will get a good man with big beautiful eyes.

So please don’t try to misguide others with the wrong translation and mis-interpretation of the verses. If something seems to be wrong to you then consult others to get the right thing. Please don’t be biased… try to learn with open mind and positive approach.

Kafir means one who rejects.

‘Kafir’ is derived from the word ‘kufr’, which means to conceal or to reject. In Islamic terminology, ‘Kafir’ means one who conceals or rejects the truth of Islam and a person who rejects Islam is in English called a ‘non-Muslim’. So, Kafir means non-muslim which is not an abuse at all.

For example, if a Hindu calls a Muslim a non-hindu, is it an abuse to that muslim person? Surely not. Similar for all other religions.

So, if a ‘non-Muslim’ considers being called a ‘non-Muslim’ or ‘Kafir’, which are one and the same, an abuse, it is due to his misunderstanding about Islam.  He or she needs to reach out to proper sources of understanding Islam and Islamic terminology. Then he or she will not feel abused but appreciate Islam in the proper perspective.
